Staff editorial: Food as medicine

Families that have a child diagnosed with epilepsy have the daunting experience of watching their kid seize uncontrollably. Drugs can be prescribed to help lessen the frightening event but can only do so much.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, “Pharmacoresistance may be defined as poor seizure control despite accurate diagnosis and carefully monitored pharmacologic treatment. Clinically available anticonvulsant drugs fail to control seizures in around 30 percent of epileptic patients, which constitutes some 15 million people in the world.”

With this lack of coverage in the medication that epileptic patients are taking, measures need to be taken to aid families in finding a drug that actually would help their symptoms. The fact that millions of people aren’t able to find a preventative solution shows that medication may not be the best way to solve the problem.

Looking to other solutions, such as diet, can be a better way to help people with epilepsy reduce the severity of their seizures and the damage they can cause. According to Medical News Today, eating foods high in fat and low in carbs may help with reducing the number of seizures and epileptic experiences.

When a patient is tolerant to the medications given, changing and watching their diet could be an alternative solution. A study published in the scholarly journal “Neurology” displayed that this alternative preventative method could be a possible treatment method.

“Researchers aimed to review the high-fat, low-carbohydrate ketogenic and modified Atkins diets for the treatment of refractory epilepsy (drug-resistant epilepsy) in adults. Both diets have proven successful in children, yet they are studied in adults insufficiently,” according to Medical News Today.

Simply eating a diet based on foods like bacon, fish, cheese, avocado, vegetables and fruit could help to lessen the severity of an epileptic’s symptoms. Promoting this type of diet to patients with epilepsy could help to reduce the number of people that aren’t able to control their seizures.

In the long run, people should begin to think of alternative treatment methods rather than depending on medicine for epilepsy, as well as other medical issues. Most individuals tend to believe that medication is the only way to treat their illness when there are many other alternatives. Finding a diet and maintaining it could possibly be one of these and is proven to be successful for epileptics.
