Mass shootings have been the theme of America over the past few years, with shootings happening almost every day taking hundreds of innocent lives. But are people overreacting, or do they need to take necessary precautions to feel safe wherever they are?
America is suffering, and citizens are worried to go out in public. People are worried for their lives, their children’s lives and the lives of their families. The country as a whole obviously has a massive problem on their hands, and it’s one that’s needed to be fixed.
People have been taking more and more precautions, which are necessary to feel safe. However, everyday people go as far as to change their daily routines just because they’re so worried about something happening to them. They’ll take a different way to work, stay in to eat instead of going out, and even buy groceries online instead of going to the grocery store.
Americans are so scared and worried that they’ll even run from a motorcycle that was backfiring, which actually happened. A little over a month ago, hundreds of thousands of people ran for their lives in Times Square as they mistook a motorcycle that backfired for gunshots, according to NBC New York.
Now, schools are starting to buy trauma kits that include: trauma pads, sterile gloves, duct tape, bandages, and more. Newark City Schools in Ohio are the first school district in the United States to implement these to their students and more districts could follow, according to WOSU Media.
Therefore, should all schools do this? Buying trauma packs is a great idea but it’s only use will come if something was going to happen; it doesn’t really make schools safer in anyway.
As a high school student, this thought seems to linger around a lot and it’s assumed students and teachers feel the same way. Just because it’s something that students think about, doesn’t mean they don’t feel safe at school. But to some’s surprise it appears that teachers are more worried than their students.
English teacher Laura Calland, said she ultimately feels safe at school, but not as
much as she did when she started teaching 11 years ago. This is contrary to what senior, Alex Shockey, had to say on how he does feel pretty safe here at school.
Only around a month into the new school year, there has already been students in and around Central Ohio that have threatened and or been caught with guns in their schools. And who does this affect most? The parents.
School shootings are a sensitive topic, but this is another example of how people, parents specifically, overreact. The Washington Post explains how school shootings are extremely rare and how they’re not, to many people’s surprise, the No. 1 place for a mass shooting to occur.
From a parent perspective, watching the news, hearing about school shootings then having to send your child to school is very scary. But, parents can go as far as to take their kids out of school for days or weeks just because of a threat that happened at another school.
Shootings are a scary topic, and it’s a good idea to be careful but this should not change how people live their lives. Always be safe, and if a situation ever arises just know to never overreact, that’s the worst thing someone can do.
