Orange Media publications are official student-produced mediums of news and information published by the Journalism students of Olentangy Orange High School. The publications have been established as a designated public forum for student journalists to inform, educate and entertain readers as well as for the discussion of issues of concern to their audience. They  will not be reviewed or restrained by school officials, adults or sources prior to publication.

The content of the publications is determined by and reflects only the views of the student staff and not school officials or the school itself. They will not publish any material, determined by the staff or adviser, that is libelous, obscene or disruptive to the school day.

The advisers are Kari Phillips and Brian Nicola. Readers may respond to the publications through Letters to the Editor. Letters may be mailed, e-mailed to thecourierstaff@gmail.com or dropped off to room 2223. The staff asks that submissions be 300 words or less and contain the author’s name and signature. Editors reserve the right to edit or withhold publication of letters.

The publications strive to uphold the Canons of Professional Journalism, which includes accuracy, impartiality, etc. Therefore, major errors will be corrected in the next issue. Distinction will be marked between news and opinion stories.

Courier tries veggie tale edition: Do fast food vegetarian options measure up?

Public Service Announcement! Its official, meat is… starting to go out of style. That’s right, some meat eaters are starting to join the greener side. As more and more people are becoming vegetarian, consumers are stopping eating at restaurants that don’t give many vegetarian options.

 

As a result, more restaurants have started serving vegetarian foods. Even more recently, fast food chains are jumping on the trend in order to cater to other diets, and the Courier decided to try it out.

 

The first item tried was the Impossible Whopper at Burger King. The name “Impossible” came from the idea that it’s indistinguishable from a regular Whopper, and both were delicious, this was confirmed by Catherine Wu, Sorina Larsen and myself by comparing both versions, side-by-side.

 

After trying both versions, “you can tell that the Impossible Whopper is not meat based on the texture when compared to the regular Whopper, but it wouldn’t be as noticeable without a comparison,” Wu said.

 

Both Courier members agreed that as meat eaters, options like this, would help immensely if they were to go vegetarian.

 

“You would honestly never know the difference. It looks like a regular burger, the condiments really help and honestly I would get the Impossible Whopper again as the texture and taste is quite good,” Larsen said.

 

To the companies, such as Burger King, it adds a nice thoughtful touch to the menu according to the Burger King Manager Michael, who manages the Burger King at this location.

 

“For people out there who don’t eat meat, we want them to have options too. We know people have different dietary needs. Our veggie burger and our Impossible Whopper will help with that,” Micheal said.

 

Micheal is also interested to see where these more inclusive menus will take the industry.

 

“I heard that KFC is coming out with vegetarian chicken, and I think that it’s important, especially considering the growing market for those options. Now, we are making about 100 Impossible Whoppers each day,” Micheal said.

 

Moving on to the next restaurant, Wu and Larson tried items from the Taco Bell menu; the items included was the Cheese Quesadilla and the Super Power Bowl which includes beans, rice, guacamole, tomatoes, cheese and various vegetables. Not only was the food good, but it’s quite impressive how many vegetarian dishes they have.

 

“Here, they have a lot of variety of vegetarian options. You definitely wouldn’t feel left out compared to going to other places that don’t offer these options. I would definitely visit Taco Bell more than other fast food places if vegetarian, based on the number of items on the menu,” Larsen said.

 

Overall, this was a great experience that is recommended regardless, vegetarian or meat eater. The Impossible Whopper really is a great substitute and Taco Bell didn’t fail to impress. An important factor is, the staff at Burger King were funny and the Taco Bell staff were great. Both restaurants get five out of five stars.

 

“This is the best day ever. I’m full, and the Taco Bell register person was cute,” Wu said.
