Join medical club stat: Rising doctors get informed about future careers
Medical Club, which is new this year, brings together students as future doctors, dentists and surgeons of this generation during its monthly meetings. Medical Club allows students to advance their knowledge of the medical community.
Seniors Daniel Shpil and Simran Rai decided to build their club from the ground up this August with the help of their adviser and science teacher Tammy Sensibaugh. Both Shpil and Rai have a passion for medicine. They each hope to shape their career paths around a medical specialty or the healthcare field in the future.
With over 200 members, students meet approximately once per month to hear from guest speakers from different specialties within the world of medicine. For example, the club hosted a dental assistant at its most recent meeting. The club’s main goal is to give students a perspective on what a day in the life of a medical professional would look like for students’ future careers.
The drive behind the commencement of the club was, “to provide an opportunity for students to learn about what various careers within healthcare may entail,” Shpil explained.
The Medical Club is not only new but also rather unique in contrast to other high school clubs available to the student body. The club is the pioneer of future clubs to advance student knowledge in a variety of fields.
Medical Club is designed to be creative and outside-the-box. Very few clubs, if any, have made the jump to having professionals speaking at their events. “We host professional healthcare guest speakers on a regular basis, which is not something a lot of clubs do,” Shpil said.
Shpil and Rai intend to focus on the medical professionals as the center of their club. The main idea for medical club is to “bring in guest speakers to cover various medical fields,” Sensibaugh said.
The club is still accepting new members and anyone interested can text @oohsmed to 81010 to find out when the next meeting is. All members must attend five meetings throughout the year to continue their membership within the club.
The leaders of the club are striving to create an environment where learning new things is fun. Medical Club’s goal is to introduce the student body to new careers that may help them in deciding their futures.
“We want to help people find their passion in medicine while being able to share their enthusiasm with their peers in the community,” Shpil said.
