Burn out or turn up the heat: Athletes weigh in on their year round sports

Playing a sport year-round or even for more than half the year can get boring. Doing the same thing over and over starts to get old and can even lead students to give up on their sport. Almost every high school student plays at least one sport, including band, and have practices and events almost every weekday and most weekends.

“It’s a year-round sport. School offseason is from January through August and then in school season starts in August and ends in November. Then, club season starts in November and lasts through the summer,” sophomore volleyball player Mac Spurbeck said. For Spurbeck, this is normal because she has been playing the sport for five years, which is 10 different seasons. Although this is normal for her, she still finds it getting tiring.

Even though Spurbeck only plays one sport, it is still very demanding and requires specific time management.

“Your schedule can get very busy very fast, especially when it comes to extra curricular activities, so for me it’s crucial to pick and choose the things that I want to do so that I make sure I have time for my assignments,” Spurbeck said.

“I am starting to get bored of the act of actually playing volleyball, but I definitely still love the sport with all my heart. I am still so interested in the aspects of it all. I think my career as a player is coming to an end, but I definitely want to go on as an assistant volleyball coach at a volleyball club and go on with that for a while,” Spurbeck said.

Students often find that they still have a love and passion for the sport, they just become tired of the repetition of the act of playing the sport.

Playing the same sport year-round can leave students more susceptible to injuries from overuse. Junior tennis player Gabi Valiulis faced a sprained ankle her freshman year and it impacted her everyday life, “ Walking in general was a lot harder and it hurt a lot. I had to leave my classes a few minutes early so that I was able to have enough time to go up and down stairs and walk such long distances,” Valiulis said. .

However, students do overcome the injuries and want to recover as quickly as possible. Therefore, they can play the sport they love. “I tried to make sure I stayed off my ankle as much as possible so that it would heal faster so I could get back on the court as soon as possible. Because while the act of playing the sport may be boring my love for it is still very visible,” Valiulis said.

These athletes don’t just overcome injuries, they also come up with ways to stay positive and to stay motivated.

“I get my motivation from the feeling after a game, whether we win or lose. Winning motivates me to keep up the good work, while losing helps me push myself even harder,” Valiulis said.

Another way to help athletes to stay excited and involved in their sports is to do multiple sports a year.

“Tennis is probably my favorite sport but I also swim and run track. I play three sports because it keeps me active and social. I love having a variety of things to do throughout the year,” Valiulis said.

Many athletes are purely bored of participating in their one sport because they’ve done it for so long but they still love the rewards that come with playing that sport and have no idea what they would have done without it.

“Volleyball has brought me so many opportunities and friends and has truly made my life better. Most of my friends play volleyball which definitely makes me want to stick with it,” Spurbeck said. For many athletes they may choose to stay in their sport because some of their friends are on the team and they want to be able to spend more time with each other.
