Orange Media publications are official student-produced mediums of news and information published by the Journalism students of Olentangy Orange High School. The publications have been established as a designated public forum for student journalists to inform, educate and entertain readers as well as for the discussion of issues of concern to their audience. They  will not be reviewed or restrained by school officials, adults or sources prior to publication.

The content of the publications is determined by and reflects only the views of the student staff and not school officials or the school itself. They will not publish any material, determined by the staff or adviser, that is libelous, obscene or disruptive to the school day.

The advisers are Kari Phillips and Brian Nicola. Readers may respond to the publications through Letters to the Editor. Letters may be mailed, e-mailed to thecourierstaff@gmail.com or dropped off to room 2223. The staff asks that submissions be 300 words or less and contain the author’s name and signature. Editors reserve the right to edit or withhold publication of letters.

The publications strive to uphold the Canons of Professional Journalism, which includes accuracy, impartiality, etc. Therefore, major errors will be corrected in the next issue. Distinction will be marked between news and opinion stories.

The final stretch

It’s weeks before the school year ends. The warm weather is coming in,  and all of the struggle the girl had to deal with for last several months is finally coming to an end. She sighs and relaxes for a rare moment because for once, homework isn’t due.

 

Suddenly, she bolts upright in shock. Finals, she remembers: I have to study for my finals.

 

There goes that moment of spare time for the girl. She looks around her room dejectedly for her notes. She finally finds them and begins her study which will undoubtedly take hours. 

 

The end of the school year usually means good things for students; summer is on the horizon and upperclassmen are getting ready for prom. But there is one downside that all students can agree on: the inevitable approach of finals and AP exams. 

 

Finals this year are on May 17-22. Not all students have to take finals in every class, if they took a state test earlier in the year. AP testing is May 7-18.

 

Finals cause stress because students have to recall everything they have learned in the past year. And for most, that’s a near impossible feat. 

 

“It’s hard being tested on an entire year’s worth of content when we haven’t touched the topic since the unit test,” sophomore Amishi Singh said.

 

Most students also find themselves studying last minute and stressing over how they will remember all the year’s topics in a limited amount of days.

 

“It might be a little overwhelming knowing that’s it’s less than a month away. It also takes a lot of time and energy,” senior Iman Haji said.

 

On top of finals, many students also face AP exams. These tests create more pressure on students as they will determine whether they will get college credit, which was the main reason some students took AP classes. 

 

“AP exams are really stressful because I put way too much pressure on myself to do well. It’s an important test because I want to get college credit and not have to take the class later on,” Singh said. 

 

Nevertheless, students are preparing by going through all the work from previous lessons and trying to remember what it all means. 

 

“The most stressful part of finals is having to cram all the stuff you learned in your head and having to find your old notes,” Haji said.

 

One happy thought for Haji is that she will be graduating soon.

 

“I’m not as stressed this year because all I’m focusing on is that I’ll be home free after finals,” Haji said.

 

Though finals and AP exams are tough to get through there are plenty of way to study for them. 

 

“The way I study for the test is by pacing myself. I study for about half an hour a day.” Singh said.

 

It’s also good to make sure not to procrastinate, that way studying won’t  be such a task in the future. It’s also to take breaks and relax.

 

“I think taking breaks helps, at least for me. It helps just calm down and regain my focus,” Haji said.
