Deck the halls or cash the checks?

It's Christmas morning. You wake up slowly and spend the day with your extended family- relaxing, watching movies and opening gifts. Everyone in your family made it miles to spend time all together. Well, then everyone in your family isn’t one quarter of Americans then. This year, 25 percent of Americans will spend their days like any other: working, according to USA Today.


Depending on who one asks, many think that working over the holidays can be a bad thing, but that’s not the case for everyone.

Depending on where people work, on the national holidays such as Thanksgiving and Christmas, employees can usually get time and a half or double time since they are working on a holiday. For me, I will get time and a half for working on the major holidays so it entices me to work.


Not all companies provide this extra benefit for various reasons such as not enough money in payroll, or not being busy enough. These policies lead to people getting frustrated with working on the holidays because there isn’t any extra incentive. Some feel as though they shouldn’t have to work on a religious holiday when they aren’t receiving any compensation for missing out on precious time with their family.

Also, there are various places that hire based on seasonal needs which could benefit people since the holiday times could be the most expensive season of the year because people have a lot of people to buy gifts for.


Allowing people to work a seasonal job is another benefit to working over the holidays because these workers also received an increased wage on the holidays. Making the sacrifice to work on a holiday could also allow them to receive an offer for a full-time job if the store likes their work ethic after the season is over.


One of the benefits that can outweigh a person’s decision of whether to work are the hours. Most of the major businesses within Columbus have extended hours on Thanksgiving and shorter hours on Christmas. These varied hours allow for the workers to have more time with their family before they go into work.


For example, many retail stores offer various incentives so their employees work on the holidays. Starbucks offers their employees time and a half on the major holidays, and they give their employees days within the holiday season where their discount is higher than normal so they can purchase various gifts for their family and friends.


A final reason why I think that working on the holidays could be a good thing is because there are people out there who are passionate about their job and they might just want to celebrate their holiday by working. Also they might want to spend their holiday with their coworkers because they value their relationships with them.


There are some places that allow the co-workers to participate within a “Secret Santa” or a gift exchange similar to this that allows their coworkers to enjoy the holiday even though they might be working on that day. This is a great way for co-workers to bond since during the holidays new co-workers are being hired and everyone might not know each other. This is something else that I enjoy because I like getting to know my co-workers because knowing them will make my job easier for me.


No matter what you think you are forced into, I feel like if someone doesn’t want to work on a holiday for the various different reasons I talked about, they shouldn’t have to. Employers don’t always know what problems can fill a family, so they should not force someone into working, but offering incentives can make the decision a bit easier for peopl
