Charlottesville yet again glorifies terrorists

Horror struck into the hearts of hundreds in Charlottesville, Virginia on Aug. 12 causing panic across the entire country. What was supposed to be a peaceful protest developed into a riot as white nationalists and counter protesters clashed in the heart of the city.

According to USA Today, white nationalists held a rally in which some were waving swastikas in protest of the removal of Confederate statues such as Stonewall Jackson and Robert E Lee. Then, a state of emergency was issued in response to the protest as counter-protesters clashed with alt-right supremacists.

Tensions were therefore already elevated when a neo- Nazi, James Alex Fields Jr, plowed several counter-protesters. Counter protester, Heather Heyer, 32, died and at least 19 others were injured.

The media and some Americans criticized Donald Trump’s reaction to Charlottesville. However, the reality is society is to blame. Society has glorified the actions done b y

terrorists and sociopaths as these acts have become the cover story of nearly every newspaper.

David Draiman, the lead singer of Disturbed, describes the media’s wrongdoing as he explains his song “Legion of Monsters”, The public knowing all just encourages a new generation of wannabe maniacs to do the same thing, to get that same glory and to die in infamy. The media continues to breed a new legion of monsters,” according to songfacts.com

So far this is true as the media is ennobling a killer, rather than paying respects to Heyer and what she stood for.

Heyer was counter protesting white nationalists at the rally when she was brutally struck by a Dodge Challenger. To many people Heather stood as a symbol of hope, unity and tolerance.

Ms Blair, Heyer’s best friend, was left totally distraught when she heard of her best friend’s death. Yet, Ms Blair continues to spread Heyer’s message of tolerance, peace and love. “We thought, What would Heather do? Heather would go harder. So that’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to preach love.

We’re going to preach equality, and Heather’s death won’t be in vain,” said Ms Blair.

Not only are victims disrespected, the glorification of radicals such as ISIS has sparked people to retaliate back with revenge attacks.

According to the Telegraph in late June 2017, Darren Osborne, 47, ploughed down a group of Muslims returning from Ramadan prayers. He jumped out of his car before it hit several men and shouted, “I’m going to kill all Muslims! - I did my bit.”

Once police arrived to the scene, Osborne carelessly smiled, waved and blew kisses at them depicting that he had no regrets and purposely targeted the Muslims.

The solution to ending this complete madness is to end the glorification of madmen and instead honor the victims’ lives. The way to end global terrorism is to fight it by spreading happiness, peace, tolerance and love. Until then, society will continue to live in a world of dismay and horror as the media continues to literally breed a new legion of monsters each and every day.
