Getting on track for nationals
Science Olympiad’s gaming tournament has smashed their fundraising expectations.
On Sept. 11, Science Olympiad held a Super Smash Brothers tournament in order to raise funds for their upcoming season. This was the first of two tournaments they will hold; the next takes place on Sept. 25.
Sophomore Ashton Rakjumar was in charge of organizing the event. He said that though the planning process was lengthy, the rewards will be worth it.
“We put a lot of hard work into planning this event,” Rakjumar said. “We really wanted to make sure it went smoothly, and that everyone who attended would have fun. This week our attendance was great, and we hope to see even more people at the next one. We just want to make sure that we can raise as much money as possible to make this Science Olympiad season fantastic.”
Senior Savannah Schroeder is the team captain, which means she is in charge of organizing events, leading meetings, and unifying the team. Schroeder said that the team has been an integral part of her high school experience, and that she is excited for what the money raised by the tournament will do.
“The entire time I’ve been in Science Olympiad has been fantastic,” Schroeder said. “We’re all so close, we’re like a family. We get to go on all of these amazing trips, and the money we make from our tournaments will hopefully allow us to go to even more. Any funds we raise will go towards making it possible for us to cover all the different expenses that get us to more invitationals.”
Schroeder said that this fundraiser, and others throughout the year, may result in the team being able to reach their goal for the season.
“My hope for the team is for us to reach Nationals,” Schroeder said. “It’s pretty up there, but I think we can do it. We’re incredibly strong, and I think we may have a chance this year. And even if we don’t, this season is going to be fantastic.”
Students can get involved by coming to one of the club’s meetings, attending their fundraisers, or talking to the club’s advisor, Bethany Janusz.
