This year’s presidential election was a surprise to everyone to say the least. According to the Pollsters, Hillary Clinton, the democratic nominee, was predicted to beat her republican counterpart, Donald Trump by a landslide. Trump prevailed on top by all of the five swing states.
As of Nov. 15, it is predicted that Trump will have a total of 290 to Hillary’s 232. Hillary won the popular vote though and it was 61,325,547 to 60,527,577 for Trump.
“The electoral reacted different than what the polling indicated so it was a very interesting turn out with non college degree whites played a big part in the election. But the big story and bottom line is Trump won the 5 battle ground states that Obama won and Hillary couldn’t, OH., PA., MI. FL. and NC. By winning in those states he won the electoral college but what is fascinating is the popular vote,” AP Government teacher John Carmichael said.
Bob Dylan and Nobel Peace Prize
Songwriter Bob Dylan won the 2016 Nobel Peace prize in literature this previous October. This comes as a surprise to the community since Dylan is a singer, not a novelist.
Past winners of the prize include Svetlana Alexivich, Patrick Modiano and Alice Munro according to nobelprize. org. According to the Swedish Academy, Dylan won “for having created new poetic expressions within the great American song tradition.”
If the Nobel prize honors “the best”, Dylan is it. He’s had a genius impact on language, music, poetry and even a generation. Anyone who can disrupt the status quo in a sophisticated and meaningful way should be honored.
So honoring Bob Dylan- an artist of words, music and poetry- is the perfect antithesis to the seeming rigidity of the world.
Planned School Shooting
According to EverytownResearch.org, 196 school shootings have occurred in the past three years. Most people do not think that it could ever happen to them, but this thought was almost proved wrong for the students and staff at Hilliard Davidson High School.
During the week of Sept. 19, Hilliard police arrested a student who had begun a plan to attack the school. Luckily, he was caught in the early planning stages and “never posed any harm to students or staff,” according to NBC4i and Hilliard police.
“Police released a statement about it the day after they removed the student from class. I was shocked. Everyone thinks that it [school shootings] won’t happen to them, but it actually almost happened here,” senior at Hilliard Davidson Brian Egolf said.
The scary thing is, although people may not expect it, school shootings can happen to anyone.
