Shooting for a winning season

It’s time; Winter sports are right around the corner. Just two more weeks until the hockey team kicks off its pre-season against New Albany High School.

The men finished off the 2015-2016 season with a 16-15-3 record. They worked off and on the ice all summer and are prepared for this upcoming season.

“We have our systems in place and have an idea of what kind of identity we want to have as a team. There is no doubt that the work the guys put in the gym over the past nine months will pay dividends on the ice this season,” Varsity Head Coach Tim Chugh said.

The weekend to keep in mind this season is Jan. 6th through the -8th. The varsity team takes on Olentangy Liberty on Friday, Jan. 6, Thomas Worthington on Saturday, Jan. 7, and Olentangy High School on Sunday, Jan. 8.

These games have been anticipated since last season when OOHS defeated OLHS in overtime to win the ‘Battle of Olentangy’.

“They are all tough games. What are the games I do have circled? That’s easy, ‘Olentangy week,’” said Chugh.

The hockey program only have six remaining varsity players from last season. They are looking for young leaders and also for the upperclassmen to take a leadership role this season.

Seniors Mark Murley and Josh Rochon look to lead the team this season. They’ve been part of the varsity team all four years and look to lead the team to a successful season in their final year of high school hockey.

“Mark Murley and Josh Rochon will lead the team this year” said Sophomore Josh Gutkoski. Last season, Murley lead Central Ohio in assists with a tally of 19. Rochon finished 11th place in the conference with 13 goals.

The guys look forward to battling against NAHS in their first preseason game. The matchup will take place at Chiller North on Friday, Nov. 11, starting at 7:50 pm. The Pioneers look to start the season with a victory.
