"Spring" into a new style

In the midst of falling snow and temperatures below freezing, it’s almost hard to believe that spring is really just around the corner. But it is, which means it’s almost time to ditch the heavy layers and dark colors in exchange for lightweight, flowing fabrics and bright prints.

The way I see it, spring is the best, most exciting time of year when it comes to getting dressed each morning, so have fun playing around with the wide variety of fresh new looks that are up and coming for the year.

One of the biggest new shapes for spring ’15 is the midi skirt, which hits just below the knee. These skirts often have a fitted silhouette, but I prefer flared out styles instead as they’re easier to move in and give off a more youthful look. And, coincidentally, these skirts happen to fit the school’s dress code- unlike many warm weather trends.

Bloggers are often spotted wearing printed versions of them with simple fitted tops and strappy heels, although the look could easily be translated for a casual, everyday look with strappy flat sandals or even Birkenstocks, the trendy sandals that are so ugly- they’re cute.

Another big look for this year is joggers, which happen to be just as comfy as--if not comfier than--your PJ’s (and possibly something you already own, since they were big hit in the fashion world last year as well).

I prefer to wear them in bright prints with a neutral top, and lots of interesting accessories such as chunky, layered necklaces or rings with an antique feel to them- the more the better! Or, you could go for a sportier look by pairing them with a boxy crop top and slip on sneakers.

Kimonos are another fun trend for spring; they feel exotic and are one of my personal favorites for this time of year. They’re usually sheer and come in a variety of different lengths and patterns (the most popular being floral). If you want to go for a bold look, you could throw on a fringed kimono with a cropped T, skinny jeans and some chunky sandals.

Yet another exciting new trend for this year is the over-all skirt or the bibbed skirt, a funky, slightly off beat look that’s best worn with a simple T-shirt underneath. Depending on the shoes worn, these can also give off a schoolgirl-like vibe.

Or, maybe you’re not quite finished with your winter staples. Try pairing knee high lace up boots with denim cut off shorts and a graphic tee for an edgy look that will transition you perfectly between the seasons.

Another great way to transition your wardrobe from winter to spring is by wearing cropped sweaters, they’ll still keep you warm on cold winter days and chilly spring mornings, but cut out some of the extra bulk, making it the perfect piece for when mother nature just can’t decide what season it is. Try paring them with all kinds of skirts (maybe even that midi skirt) or just jeans for a more casual look.

Whatever new look you chose to rock this season, just remember that the most important thing is to have fun when picking out an outfit, and to walk down the streets- or school halls- with confidence.
